Heart Stealer Mittens - Free Pattern for Mittens!

She's a little bit of sunshine/ She's a smile to light your days/ She will steal your heart and keep it/ With her warm endearing ways

She's your precious little daughter/ With a sweetness from above/ Who will fill your years with laughter/ And your lives with lots of love

Like I said in an earlier post, this poem always reminds me of Isola and her sweet smile. I thought I had to make her mittens holding my heart! Now you can make them too, they are fast knits and great gifts.
I've used a sport weight yarn and double pointed needles, size 3 mm and the mittens fit any 2-4 years old. I made instructions for hearts on both hands but I think it's quite cute with a heart on only one too. You'll need one main color, one skein is enough, and scrap yarn of a constrasting color...

Getting Started:
Cast on 36 stitches on dpns. Mark the beginning of the rounds

Cuff:
Work 22 rounds in K2P2.

Shape Thumb Gusset:
Round 1-3: K1, P1, K3, P1, K to end of round.
Round 4: K1, P1, inc one in next stitch, K1, inc one in next stitch, P1, K to end of round. Rounds 5 and 6: K1, P1, K5, P1, K to end of round.
Round 7: K1, P1, inc one in next stitch, K3, inc one in next stitch, P1, K to end of round. Rounds 8 and 9: K1, P1, K7, P1, K to end of round.
Round 10: K1, P1, inc one in next stitch, K5, inc one in next stitch, P1, K to end of round. Rounds 11 and 12: K1, P1, K9, P1, K to end of round
Round 13: K1, P1, inc one in next stitch, K7, inc one in next stitch, P1, K to end of round. Rounds 14 and 15: K1, P1, K11, P1, K to end of round.
At this point, you should have a total of 44 stitches

Save out stitches for thumb:
On next round, K2, place next 11 stitches on a holder. Cast on 3 stitches, K to end of round.

Shape RIGHT hand: On the next round, start making the heart pattern like this;
Round 1: K10, K1 with pink (or other contrasting color), K to end of round with main color.
Round 2: K9, K3 with pink, K to end of round with main color.
Round 3: K8, K5 with pink, K to end of round with main color.
Round 4-6: K7, K7 with pink, K to end of round with main color.
Round 7: K7, K3 with pink, K1 with main color, K3 with pink, K to end of round with main color.
Round 8: K8, K2 with pink, K1 with main color, K2 with pink, K to end of round.
Work another 5 rounds in main color.
Shape LEFT hand: On the next round, start making the heart pattern like this;

Rounds 2 and 3: Knit even.
Round 4: (Sl 1, K1, PSSO, K3). Repeat 5 more times for a total of 24 stitches remaining.

Break off yarn and thread the yarn through the remaining 6 stitches. Draw yarn up tightly and fasten.

Making the Thumb:
The thumb is worked in the round on 16 stitches. Use the 11 stitches that you saved onto a holder and pick up 5 more stitches evenly across the 3 cast-on stitches, be sure to pick up stitches in the corners to avoid holes.
Divide these stitches onto 3 needles.
Knit even for 7 rounds.
Shape top of thumb:
Round 1: (K2tog) 8 times. 8 stitches remain.
Round 2: Knit even
Round 3: (K2tog) 4 times. 4 stitches remain. Break off yarn and thread the yarn through the remaining 4 stitches. Draw yarn up tightly and fasten.
Weave in yarn ends.

  1. How I love these mittens! I would like to knit them for our 8 Y/O granddaughter; therefore, I would appreciate it if you would post directions for larger sizes .. please, please!

  2. Oh, thank you so much! I'd love to make these (and some of my other patterns) in larger sizes but I really don't have the time to do this for the time being. However, I do believe that this pattern will work with another gauge too... If you try to follow the pattern as it is but switch to a light worsted weight yarn (gauge 21-24 sts) and a needle size 3,75-4,5mm (US size 5-7) there is a good chance that it will work for your granddaughter. It's no guarantee, I haven't test knitted this gauge myself but it's a fast knit so you will soon find out if it works for her!
